KDE Desktop help?

Hi all

I have just got and installed Redhat 9 after many (unhappy) years of Micro$oft products. I am more than happy with Linux so far. I cant believe I lived without it for so long! I cant wait to start tweaking!.

At the moment i am just playing around with some of the applications that came with Redhat. But I am having a few problems with my migration from Wins. Hope someone can help:

1) I have KDE as my desktop. But when I logout it goes back to the login screen and from there I have to choose Shutdown. How can I change this so I can choose from KDE?

2) I donwloaded Winamp. But I cant get streaming and cant get it to read any mp3 files. It just hangs. I have created a desktop Icon to go to the Winamp script.

3) I have a wireless card (3com Airconnect) but this is not recognised when I installed Redhat. Are there any drivers for this card? And how to apply so it will work?

I can see how much I will enjoy using Linux. There is a lot of tweaking to do but this will make more sense the more I use it. Its hard moving from windows to a system where you have complete control, rather than a dumb terminal (which windows so clearly is). I have purchased a couple of books that should get me going!

1) I guess you use auto-login? Try turning that off and see if it works now from KDE. If so I think I can help you a bit further.

I dont use Auto login. I have to stick in my username and password.

I cant believe you have to go back to the login screen to shutdown. You only have LOGOUT as an option on the Kmenu, so I guess maybe you do.

Your using Redhat?
Well, Redhat removed this option from kde
To get it back, place the following line into /etc/sysconfig/desktop:
[code:1]
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
[/code:1]
After this KDE should offer the shutdown option when logging out.
Don't use Windows-aplications on Linux, use proper linuxapplication in stead. xmms is more then capable to play mp3. In RedHat you should download the mp3-plugin though from the site of mmx.
check the RH site if RH supports this type of card.
Most network cards now adays also include Linux drivers on their installation disk or website.

The airconnect uses the prism driver. See:

I have RH9 using kde 3.1 and when i click on log out i only get the option "are you sure..."

once upon a time i had logout, shutdown and reboot, but i dont know where it went!!!

I've been searching but can't find a possible solution. The button I placed on my taskbar uses "kdesktop default logout" as a shortcut. But I guess this doesn't do the trick for you.

Well the solutin is to add the option desktopmanager=KDE to you /etc/sysconfig/desktop .

If after that KDE still does not show the options you also have to configure your session manager using kcontrol

Dont know why KDE removed this option. Even like the dragon! hahah
