why can't i browse my local network with konqueror?

I have been setting up my KDE desktop, which is great -- except that I can't browse my local network via konqueror. (I am running Redhat 8.0)

I have been able to do this with no trouble in Nautilus (when on the Gnome desktop).

On Konqueror: I can call up the network by keying in

smb://networkname

and can get a listing of the available directories. But when I click on one of the directories, no files come up.

any ideas?
