Kmail no longer working.... *help*

Helllo All;

I'm really hoping someone is going to be able to help me. I am more than a little frustrated with this problem right now. I wanted to install Open Office onto my Debian box, so I started by doing an apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade. When I restarted the PC, my mouse wasn't working (I solved that, it was a gpm problem, so I just stopped it) but now my kmail won't start either. If I try to start kmail from the panel, I just get the error "KDEinit could not launch 'kmail'. When I try to start kmail from the # in a shell, I get :

kmail: relocation error: kmail: undefined symbol: _8DwString.npos

PLEASE, I really need some help with this one. I don't know what's going on. I did a search, but the only place I can find this error at all is in a list of bugs, but there is no solution offered. The page with it listed as a bug is:
lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2003/ debian-devel-announce-200303/msg00022.html

Thanks so much for any help,

Quinn

I am not entirely familiar with Debian, so I might be way off, however...

When you fire up apt-get update, do you get a log of what it updated? If so, you might want to check if the updates it installed are not from different KDE versions (like QT2 with KDE3, or something silly like that).

Looks like a problem with libstdc++

Perhaps one of the newly installed packages required a new version of the C++ standard lib which is not binary compatible to the old one.

Which Debian branch are you using?
