3rd week on Arklinux without internet access

I've been on Arklinux h20 alpha 7 for about 3 weeks now, and I'm a newbie. I can't get online with DSL or dial-up. I'm running a pentium 2/ 320 megs of RAM/ 8 gigs. adsl-config returns the error message, "timeout while waiting for PADO packets". adsl-status says, "link is to ppp1 (or 2 or 3), but ppp1 (Or whichever) is down.
Modem gets stuck at "Initializing modem". I tried the same distro on a friends pc with the same result. When I first installed Arklinux, the support was impeccable, with a quick response to any questions asked. About a week ago they reduced support to a mailing list.
I don't know whether to whether to try a different distro (Which I don't want to do, arklinux is great), or stick it out until I learn enough to get online.

Any help would be appreciated.
The me I was no longer is...I am no longer me.
