KsCD Direct Digital Playback

I see that option on the configuration dialog for KsCD, but it's greyed out. Does anyone know what it's dependent on to become available for activation? I've googled and searched this and the gentoo forums for about 2 hours now.

I'm using KDE 3.2 and kernel 2.6.3.
