mplayer error video_out (-vo) device

hi, i'm new in linux so i hope this isn't to bad.
when i try to open an avi file with media player i get this fatal error:
erro opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
p.s i've installed the latest linux ted hat edition fedora core 1

so what did you type after -vo in mplayer (commandline) or in the preferences-->video for gmplayer (the gui thing)? I usually open avi files like: "mplayer -vo xv somefile.avi" etc. For gmplayer, select this in the video prefs.

If Xv fails, try x11. I mean.. mplayer -vo x11 etc. Play around a little bit :)
