try launching 'aumix'. for some reason it seems to mute everything on a fresh install.

I have the same problem. Its not with aumix., I am already aware of that.
I have full sytem sounds through speakers, however, audio cd's play but no sound output. If i plug speakers into the speaker jack on front of cd drive, I get sound.
I know this kind of solves the problem, but I need a second set of speakers, and it takes the fun out of finding the problem!

perhaps you need an audio cable from your cd drive to ur motherboard/soundcard?

No, not that simple. It's there, and as I said, sound works fine on RH6 and WinXP.

Same thing. I have dual boot and the Windoze boot works fine. Redhat 9 no CD audio. Did anyone figure this one out. I sure like to listen to my Ozzy and Floyd when I am developing........ :cry:

what application are you using to play your cds?

kscd?
xmms?

I tried both in every sort of way possibly. It shows the cd playing but no sound. I think something is stomping on the audio server. Maybe I 'll have to switch to Lindoze. :cry:

try in the console

killall aplay
killall artsd

I have the same problem. The CD players works with Windows, not Linux. I have read a number of posts saying this is a problem especially with Dell computers because of the way the CD player is connected to the rest of the computer. I saw a post about a week ago explaining to newbies how they can open up their machine and reconnect the CD Player, but can't find the link now.

I may be wrong about this since I am a newbie, but I know for sure my sound card and CD player are configured correctly in Linux because I do have sound and the CD player works when there's a CD-ROM in there. It's also clear that XMMS is reading the music on the CD, I just get no sound.

Sorry I can't be more of a help, but maybe someone can provide a link to instructions on how to fix this.

If you're using XMMS, select Options/Preferences, then audio plugins. I use ALSA, then use configure to check that the correct soundcard is being used, then hopefully things may sound better.

As far as I know windows uses a special technique to play cdaudio and does not require a cd audio cable.
I think linux does though. saying that it works in windows but not linux may well be a waste of time

You should check you mixer and make sure that the cd-audio specific volume is not down (or mute)
