play divx in noatun

i have a question:
* will noatun be able to play divx (*.avi) in KDE3.1 ?
* will noatun EVER be able to play divx or will it only play mpg, mp3, ogg,..

I have read that noatun doesn 't decode mp3, mpg, ogg,... but that the arts deamon does that.
So the arts deamon should be able to decode divX.

At the moment i use xine. (a good program but not kde-like -> not integrated). And kxine isn't good IMHO.

PS: what about aktion:
* I have read that it will not be part of KDE3.1 (why)
* IMHO: i don't mind because it was a bad program (it couldn't play a lot of file formats.... )

I also use xine. It would be sweet if noatun would play divx.

I use Xine and MPlayer. Never really use the video player for KDE. Would be a good idea to integrate either libXine or something so one wouldn't have to make an entire framework all over again, but aKtion returned in superhero clothes sounds like a good idea. :)

I use MPlayer, usually from the commandline.

KMPlayer by Koos Vriezen is a nice KDE frontend, if you need one.

I think Koos already imported it into kdeextragear-2

The latest KDE CVS digest also mentions kplayer http://kplayer.sourceforge.net/

i agree, so i just use console based mplayer -- classy, very classy (refers to 1000x586 resolution Matrix Reloaded theatrical trailer... :))

i would use kMplayer but theres no debian packages out there for it, so im pondering to make my first debian package with this application. kplayer is okay however it doesn't intergrate with the rest of KDE, so you cant view your movies embedded. (unless you use moz with the mozilla-mplayer plugin)

however, what about 'kaboodle' ? i wish the developers would create something multimedia application thats worth while, whilst noatun/kaboodle are okay they dont use the hacked dll's that i got for mplayer to view divx and other formats. however xine will pick up those dll's fine.

IMHO after reading all those development messages of mplayer etc. making an allaround media player isn't easy. Especially when you add all the possible legal problems to it.

Again IMHO if noatun would only develop to a good music player that'd be enough. As I see it, it'd require a new and better playlist to begin with plus ID3V2 support which I will add by myself if no one else does! :) Or maybe it's already there, I just don't that library installed...

You brought it up. So I have to say what I think of arts system. No, noatun doesn't decode anything. For music playing arts works - somehow (for me example, there are stops during songs even when there is no other system stress except arts.. my system btw is Athlon +1800 with 768MB ram). But playing movies is much much much more delicate process as you for example need to maintain audio-video sync. Because of that, simple (compared to C++ server) C program like mplayer which is specialized to movie playing WILL ALWAYS PERFORM BETTER and more efficiently.

aktion doesn't really do anything, afaik it's a frontend to an old Linux(/*NIX?) player called xanim. Xanim doesn't support any modern audio nor video codecs, as it hasn't been developed for years afaik. That's also the reason it not being included in next KDE, that is it hopefully wont be.
