kde problems

i installed gentoo stage3 xorg and kde 3.3.1 and i can login but it goes to the background then does nothing that i can see the first time i used it after installing i used the wrong user name and had a whole mess of errors about permissions etc so now im trying in root and it does nothing can someone help or tell me how to like reset evreything so i can go in again thank you
