Problems with menu editor and writing system configuration

I searched the forums for a thread that covers this problem, but I couldn't find one that matches it exactly. If one exists, please point me to it.

My problem is this: I was rearranging my start menu to unclutter it, periodically saving the changes as I went. While modifying the Games submenu, I clicked the Save icon. The Updating System Configuration status window openedas usual. But, when it hit 15% complete, it suddenly jumped to 100% and closed. When I checked the start menu, the Games submenu was messed up: items I deleted were still displayed; entries were duplicated; new folders (which I hadn't created) had shown up.

I don't know how to correct this problem. No matter how much I edit the menu, I continue to get the abbreviated configuration save process and a Games menu that gets more and more corrupted.

So I have two problems I need help with.
My immediate problem: repairing my start menu.

My long term problem: resolving the abbreviated system configuration saving process to keep this from happening in the future.

In case it makes any difference, I'm running KDE 3.3.1 on Fedora Core 2. I've only been using Linux for about a month now, so I have a lot to learn.

Regards,
See if you find any entries for the games under ~/.local/share/applications/ . If you do, delete them or move them away. Does that help?
I don't know what this is about, but it sounds like a bug. I'd recommend going to http://bugs.kde.org/ and search for the symptoms you describe. Maybe there's a workaround? If you don't find anything then please create a new bug report.

I'm afraid that's not it. Sorry.

But I found the following: ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
Take a look at that file and edit or delete it.

Thanks!

Thanks, cmbofh. That solved my problem. From now on, whenever I successfully update my menu, I'm backing up that file...just in case.
