Can't log in in to KDE 3.3.3

I can't log in as myself though I can log in as root or any other user. I use kdm as the login manager. What happens I type user name and password press return and I can see that the screen goes blank, then back to the nVidia logo and back to the KDE log on screen. This is the second time it happened. First time I just recreated my home directory and and all worked well after that. I stress that I have no problems telneting or ssh to the machine as myself problem is only with log in via KDE log on screen.
I looked through the X log file and messages log and I can' fine anything -no errors. I only found two lines:
Sep 10 07:41:57 pluto kdm: :0[4785]: pam_unix2: session started for user tomr, service xdm
Sep 10 07:41:57 pluto kdm: :0[4785]: pam_unix2: session finished for user tomr, service xdm

To me it looks like the session has started and then end - no reason why.
As I said it's the second time it happened. First time I thought that may be I did not log out properly or something. But this time I remember that I closed all the apps before logging out and then shutting machine down.
Could someone offer any pointers as to what may be going wrong here ?
