cannot log out or shut down

[Using Debian Unstable, KDE 3.2.2. ]
The KDE logout/shutdown panel does nothing when I select an option - I can only shutdown from the command line. When I try to log out from the command line using:

dcop --all-sessions --user $USER ksmserver default logout 0 -1 -1

I get the error message:

ERROR: No active KDE sessions!
If you are sure there is one, please set the $DCOPSERVER variable manually
before calling dcop.

Previously I used "apt-get remove" to get rid of xmms, and I just said yes to the options without looking. When I checked, the apt-get report said it would remove the following:

kde kdeaddons kdenetwork kicker-applets kopete xmms

None of these are currently uninstalled, but since then I can't log out.

I've rebooted and the problem still exists.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
