So you're declaring the post off-topic?
Then what are you complaining about

Well it's a question where to find something in the kernel...

honestly i find making a new topic for it a waste of space (don´t know why)

Oh don't worry. We've got lots of space
Ok last post now for me.

Yes, I totally agree with you. It is off-topic for the off-topic forum.
I just find such self-contradictions funny.

Just like "This sentence contains threee erors."
Is it true or false?

Hi MaXeR, I've noticed that you have not tried Suse Linux yet, well I recommend trying Suse Linux 8.2, I promises you will not be sorry and you my even change your mind about your favourite Distro.

i was looking at suse since i have plenty of space left, however the problem is installation. atm im very strapped for any cash (still running a 1.2ghz athlon thunderbird) so i cant purchase it, and i was trying to follow the directions on suse's site but it keeps saying it cant find the URL.

I use Mandrake 9.1 because it includes anti-aliased fonts out of the box, it's easy to install and it runs fairly well on my PC. I don't like to spend time compiling a la Gentoo. I have a habit of screwing up my installation by playing around, and Mdk is easy to install.

Well to the defence of Suse I must admit that Suse also includes anti-aliased fonts out of the box. And Kal, why don't you have a look at eBay they always have copies next to nothing!

Good luck

SuSE

They have an excellent support database.
Also rpm based and online updates like the others
It's the biggest distributor in Germany, so there are SuSE rpms for most apps available.

As a Linux user for the last 4 years, I have tried most Linux bistros out there, and THE ONE that does it for me is Suse Linux. I have currently Suse Linux 8.1 Pro and 8.2 Pro installed. For the last year or so I have been upgrading my kernel, drivers, KDE, games, patches etc on my Suse 8.1 and to my satisfaction I feel that this Suse 8.1 system is in better shape than the 8.2. I have just managed to recompile KDE 3.1.2 and it is great, although there is not much changes from 3.1.1.a. NO OFFENDING ANY OTHER DISTRO, my recommendation is Suse Linux and compile KDE from source instead of pre packed packaging.

I must apologies for originally typing Bistros instead of Distro, I guess I had my mind on restaurants at the time. SORRY

Well, after one week, I finally got gentoo up and running :)
it works great and IMO far better than mandrake (and in the beginning i really liked mandrake)
its faster, installs are much safer and easier (of kde or any other application I mean)
I admit that it does need some tweaking, I did the stage one install and did everything by hand. It was well worth it.
And at the same time it learned me a lot of linux.

My Linux rig

I'm still with the distro I started with in March 2002: SuSE 8.0. It's been rock solid for me, and I've been updating the hell out of it. But I've been intrigued with Gentoo. It looks kinda like a LFS (Linux from scratch) in that there doesn't seem to be a graphical interface to aid installation. But the idea of setting up a super clean installation of Linux is appealing. On the other hand, what's to say that other Linuces install more junk than Gentoo?

Anyway, I've been happy with SuSE. Except for the Euro-centric feel of it. It bugs me that the default page type is A4 instead of US letter. The installer doesn't seem to be smart enough to change the page size to correspond with the user's home country. But that's just a small annoyance. Unless I get a week or two to fool around with Gentoo I think I'll just stick with SuSE.
In retrospect, everything is funny.

Maybe you should try the Gentoo LiveCD.

I just wanted to add that I wish Red Hat didn't monkey with the underlying stuff in KDE. However, I do like the optics of the Bluecurve interface. To me, it's simple, but elegant.

I hope this doesn't make me a bad guy.

Cheers!

Lo !

I´m using Aurox Linux 9.0 (Aurox Page) which is fantastic ! I used to work with RedHat before switching to Aurox and now i stay absolutely happy with that very comfortable distri :D It`s based on Red Hat, you can even use Red Hat`s "up2date RHN" and of course - using rpm´s.

Gentoo as well

Gentoo here as well. Excellent distro. I originally tried installing a couple of other distros. Namely Redhat and Mandrake. Redhat was a pain in the ass I found, but I did run Mandrake for a while. The problems came when I wanted to recompile the kernel to add ACPI support. When I did that with Mandrake it seemed to break every damn thing.

So at that point I found Gentoo and got interested. I have to admit that it did take a hell of a long time to get everything running (like a whole weekend of downloading and compiling) how I wanted it, but I've never liked my system more. I like having control of what gets installed instead of booting up the system and having all these different applications that I never use that most distros add for you.

LFS, because it just fun to build it yourself. If I did'nt use LFS then I would probably use Debian or Gentoo...

Mandrake 9.1 . Probably cause Mdk has been marketted well in France ? I'm ready to change to any distro that would make my nm256 audio chip work though !

Anyway on the KDE forum I must say that regardless of Linux I'm a total KDE addict so I also use it at work on Mac (thru X11 and FinkCommander) and on Windows (through Cygwin) ... I just love the Konkeror file manager with tabbed views and the ability to call a terminal in a folder by right clicking on it.
I use KDE everywhere: on Linux, Mac, and even Windows (with cygwin) ! :D

Hi!
Nice to see other LFSers. I also like to do things the hard way :). Now back to finishing my LFS-5.0 install...
