Unable to play .wav files using mouseover, or in knotify!

Hi all,
Have asked this on a number of other forums, but so far no definative answer, so here goes.
Recently upgraded to KDE3.2 via Mandy 10.00, and have a few questions/problems.
1) When using control centre to set up knotify events for the kde events, I choose the play a sound tickbox, which is fine, then click on the browse directories icon. This of course opens the mini-browser at the default /usr/share/sounds directory. This directory I know is full of the kde .wav files. But none of them show in the browser window. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?
2) In previous incarnations, when I mouseovered? sound files, they would play automatically in an embedded manner. I can now only do this with .ogg and .mp3 files. Whatever I have tried, whenever I hover over a .wav file, nothing happens, and if I click it, I am asked which application to use to play it.

So, are these 2 things connected, and if so, how do I cure them.

More Info, this seems to be connected to mime types. As root everything works as it should do, but as user, no go. Checking mime types, the folowing happens:
root: .wav file mime type audio/wav
user: .wav file mime type audio/x-pn-windows-pcm
root: .mp3 file mime type audio/mp3
user: .mp3 file mime type audio/x-mpeg

Confused? so am I.

TIA
