multiple processes

Hi there!

i've got a little problem with kde 3.2.1 running on debian unstable. when i run for example xmms and i do 'ps xu' , i can see not one , but several processes and each taking cpu... even when i run a tiny program to chat on LAN, instead of one process i get seven...

could you help me? because i've no idea what seems to be the problem.
