have you tried to read the installation instructions? often in a file called INSTALL or README

1) extract the files:

tar zxvf VMware-workstation-4.0.0-4460.tar.gz (for example)

2) change into the vmware directory

cd vmware-distrib

3) run the install script

./vmware-install.pl

4) follow the prompts
