using kde logout stops computer.

hi.
I'm a newb for all purposes. I don't know what information would be useful to help me out. just tell me what you info you need and where i might find it on the system.

Anyhow this is my problem.

i'm not using xdm to get into kde. i just log on to my computer via console, and then type 'startx'. kde loads up just fine. no problems.

now, when i go to k>logout and hit ok the desktop seems to close and the screen goes black (or blank) and then it doesn't do anything else. I could never get back to the console.

I know from the past, you can hit <ctrl> + <alt> + backspace gets you out of x. i've tried using that instead of logout and the system still hangs.

I've tried hitting <ctrl> + <alt> + F1-F7 and nothing.

i've also changed a file /etc/X11/xdm/Xserver, which read on a website.
-:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X vt7 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
+:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X vt7 -terminate -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp

the only thing that seems to work is <ctrl> + <alt> + delete . but that just reboots the comptuer.

I don't have a clue what could be wrong. I hope someone could help.

SYSTEM:
AMD K6-2 500mhz

KDE 2.2.2 (2.2.20-idepci info from control center)

Thanks.
