Desktop problem

I have the following problem:

I have created new user (while logged as root), then logged him in KDE.
Everything works fine, but desktop is not working at all. I've tried to change any assosiated Look&Feel options, but in vain. Every of these options applies (icons, right-clicking, background, etc.), but desktop still doesn't show.

Can anyone help newbie?
