Hang, Stall, CPU maxed....

Extremely new to linux so please be gentle :)

I have read numerous posts out here so far about hangs and maxed CPU's. Some of the posts talk about services, some talk about DNS/DHCP. Others are more vague than that.

Question: Where should I begin looking to find out why my machine hangs/stalls every 20 seconds or so?

P4 with 1GB of ram should not be having these problems.

The problem seems to manifest it's self when I pull something across my local network from a win2k machine, but I can't be sure.

I have looked in the processes area and see that "X" is being pegged. I assume that this is the "x windows service", but like I said, I am a big fat newbie and actually have NO idea. I have RTFMed until I can't see anymore, but to no avail :)

Any help would be extremely appreciated.
