Basic fonts don't print from K applications but others do

My basic fonts Times New Roman, Courier New, and Palatino Linotype do not print from K applications.

The fonts act normally on screen but do not print, instead defaulting to something like Arial with a character spacing that seems appropriate to the original font.

It happens with TTF and Type1 versions. It happens with PCL and PS printers, and in Print Preview

The same “problem” fonts do print from OpenOffice Writer. All other fonts do print from K applications.

I’m using Mandrake 9.1. The ghostscript Fontmap.GS font name mapping produced by kfontinst seems to have the correct aliases and explicit path names to the location of the fonts. The results from the same setup work with other similar font names, aliases, and the same directories for the fonts -- like Georgia, Comic Sans MS, and Trebuchet MS.

I’d sure appreciate a clue to what I am missing. It gotta be something simple.
