Problem Creating program link on desktop

ok I have been out of the loop with KDE for years but with the latest release I have to say it's great. The only problem I am having is this. If I create a new program link i.e. Shortcut to a program on my desktop the permissions are set to root. I have no idea why this is but I do not want to be running programs as root all day. Has anybody had a similar problem? The process I take to create this problem is exactly this.

Right click on my desktop,
choose create new
link to application

Once I am done I check the permissions of the link and it's set to root.

Now if I create a shortcut via clicking on kde start menu then dragging it to my desktop that will be set to my regular user login.

Thanks in advance for reading.

Tried it over here, but the application links I create are not owned by root.
The fact that yours are owned by root however does not mean that the application that is launched is run under root.

What you can try is to copy the directory KDEDIR/share/templates
(KDEDIR is the directory of your kde-installation, like /opt/kde3, or /usr/lib/kde, KDE_HOME is the directory of your kde configuration, like ~/.kde or ~/.kde3)

To restore your own file permissions, do as root:
chown -R /home/username
