Yes, they are ripping everyone off, nad now starting in the gaming industry, however people amongst the technological community are becoming more aware of Microsoft and the threat it poses to the online community.

For example MS's attempt to 'take over the internet' was highly rebuked by all major tech companies -- a relieving thought. Similarly, Linux/unix systems, althought not yet making a large enough impact on the home consumer, is aking its mark on the industry. For example there are a number of major companies (here in sydney anyway), seriously considering Linux as both server side and for employee terminals. Eg. Telco's using *nix for the phone answerers. Similarly for bank tellers.

Its not looking soo bad, as long as we are aware, we can fight it!

But remember, Linux has a LONG way to go before it reaches the home PC.

I think the MS Licence are not hard enough. Also they should try to panish private user using unlicenced MS Software harder.
Why that?
No user is willing to pay hundreds of dollary for an new XP or Office Version. The use it because:
They get a "free" copy with a new PC
or
they get a pirate copy from some friends.

What will happen if pirate copies are not available any more? Will they buy the newest MS software?
No. Some of them will perhaps start to think and use something else.
Also if more private users are punished because of using pirate copies other will become scared and perhaps thinking about changing to another OS. (Not all of couse)
And MS has to do more in DRM. What do you think will users do if the new MediaPlayer don't play here huge 10 GB mp3 collection? This will be like apocalypse for some. (Well perhaps they will use winamp, but do they even kow it?) Same for DivX.

So MS please: More DRM, harder Licences, higher prices.

I think for business there strategy is quite efficient. But some pieces of this strategy are IMO beyond or near the border or legality.

So I geuss Steve Ballmer's visit to Australia was in vain. And it seems that IBM sent someone to promote Linux in Australia, according to some news sites.

It is also very cool that some PC manufacturers like IBM and Sun are planning to release pre-installed linux boxes.

HP releases Linux workstations too. Too bad I can't afford them, I would love to have one.

I think Microsoft is an impressive company, with an amazing management and PR organization -- as well as many talented developers. They have been naughty from time to time, but the main objective of a business is to make money. Microsoft had no way of knowing where the line is drawn until the government, several years too late, started getting involved and questioning its actions. Microsoft is also in a position where it has so many users that maintaining backwards compatibility is perhaps the biggest obstacle to innovation, but they have shown occasionally that they can create some very good products.

I think that's because there are more linux developers worldwide than employees @ M$.

My point of view is that the sooner M$ falls flat on his back the better it is! I use to be a MCSE four years ago and since then I am have been using Linux. I started using RedHat 5 moved on till I reached 7.0 then I tried Suse Linux 7.0 and upgraded every time there has been a new release and I am currently using Suse 8.1 with KDE3.1. And for the last 3 years I have not had M$ Windowz at home. (No regret) :twisted:

I don't have a problem with Microsoft per say... I just don't think they make products that are as good an overall value to me. In addition I have some serious reservations about their practices and believe that a convicted monopoly found guilty of preditory practices should get treated as such... instead of getting a hand slap.

I am not worried about it much. NO buisness can compete with free forever. Especially when the product thats free keeps improving at the speed that GNU/Linux is. The OS is a standard.... it is the interface for accessing the hardware of a computer. Eventually Linux will become the OS standard.

'Perhaps, I was little too general in my last post. I apologize for that. I really do agree with your post. Windows XP Professional, which I use, is one of Microsoft's must stable operating systems. However, the Windows9.X series were all pathetic cases. Yes, I mean all of them. The 9.X series were graphic overhauls and patched kernels. In fact, one wonders were MS summoned the guts to distribute each successive release of the Win9.X series as new operating systems, when they were in fact patches. The same applies to the WindowsNTs (i.e WinNT, Win2000, WinXP).

I only hope Microsoft's next attempt, Longhorn, is really a newly overhauled kernel with a much secure and efficient file system, as opposed to an XP patch and graphical upgrade (Longhorn is supposedly going to feature a 3D desktop environment). If it isn't and it isn't free, then I'll have one more reason to stick to Linux. My displeasure is not at the fact to I have to pay for Microsoft Operating systems. It is the fact that I have to pay for new patches that really bothers me. And even then, my security and privacy is not totally guaranteed. I will not even go into relative pricing of Microsoft products. It is just plain sad.

When I pay for a product or service, I expect an almost flawless performance. If a free version of Linux gave me more problems than any other operating system, it is understandable because it's free. Yes, I do agree XP is more stable and a little more secure. But when we compare XPs price/perfomance ratios, price/security ratios, price/stability ratios with that of Unix and its variants, XP is pretty lousy for an expensive operating system I paid for. '

Well I am proud to report that my company has started sending Linux kiosk type systems to our offices all over the US! We spent amost 9 months working on tuning it the way we wanted. The move has gone so well, that managment is considering replacing some windoze boxes with more capable configurations.

Beleive it or not, i am working now for more than 10 years with computing related and never use microsoft!

I think M$ did a great job in making PCs easy to use and bringing it into most homes and into main stream soceity.

As much as i dont like them because of their recent actions and buggy software
i have them to thank for opening up the PC world to me. When I first started using computers, it was back in the DOS era and i only used it to play games like Galaxian and stuff. When windows 95 came around i started to explore more and more into my computer. And now it has led me into exploring Linux (cause i was just sick and tired of the Blue Screen of Death)

But anyways, if it wasnt for windows, most computer users today wouldnt be using computers. Computers would just be for the elite few that know how to use *nix system or the rich that can afford the mac

So I think M$ was great but their time is comming to end. Just like the Evil Empire, the tighter they grip, the more systems they lose to the rebelion
