how can I configure a KOrganizer reminder pop-up?

I've seen enough references to being able to do it, and I remember that once upon a time that if I asked for a reminder on a meeting, there would just be a pop-up. I understand that the current default is to just be silent, so I have to remember to enable the reminder, but I've done so. I see the little bell in the scheduled meeting in the calendar. But it quietly lets me miss my meetings anyway. I have meandered through all the menu items one by one several times and none of them reference anything relating to "enable pop-up". So, I keep missing my meetings. My version is 3.5.9 "release 49.1". I know, it is old. The 4.x releases in the current distributions are still not ready for prime time. Maybe tomorrow's SuSE will be, but I've not tried it yet. So, did the pop-up capability get broken for that 3.5.9 release? Is there some magic that I need to "just know" to enable it? What? Thank you.
