System Settings Display crashes / resets X oddity.

in kde 4.3 fresh installed. but also showed up in 4.2.4 before the upgrade

Go to K , select Computer System Settings brings the window , but as user , it you press display , it kills x and you go back
to kdm . now when logged in as root ( kdmrc allowing for the occasion ) you do get the display dialog but still get booted
out of x when it tries to apply any changes you want done

there have been threads starting abnut some vaguely similar issues but they all end up with no solutions.

what am i supposed to be looking for ? permission problems ?
any help is appreciated.

Oddity still unexplainable.

Seems that the main problem is the x configuration file.
I replaced it with a 5 line config file and the gl problems and kde " display " segfault problems have gone.
the reminding problem is a bad exit from gl where the parameters for the screens come back wrong
and the fact that the same " display " settings dialog does not see that it's a dual head , though it shows both
monitors , but id's them wrong ( both id's show on both screns )
xrandr does place the monitors in the right sequence and xinerama is working.

Tell you . if there's a bug somewhere .. ill find it , i get them all :D
