Building a media PC with KDE

Hello,

I am busy building a separate media PC with Linux/Ubuntu for connection to my TV and surroundsystem.

I got an advice to do it with the basis of KDE. First to get used to KDE I installed it on my normal Hardy LTS desktop PC via synaptic. It was the KDE 3 version. I was advised to use the 4 version, but that was not standard in my system, so I played around a little bit sofar, untill the upgrade possibility within KDE 3 came up. So, yesterday I upgraded from Hardy LTS to Jaunty KDE 4.2 in one step. And it went very well! So my learning about KDE continues.

I know that there is a lot of media PC software. Are there differences and where should I look for? I prefer to have a standard system good for playing films on my TV with the sound of my surround system.
