can't change default paper size in kword 1.6 in kde 4.1.2 (kubuntu)

I installed kubuntu 8.10 beta on a low powered machine. Since the machine is designed to be used by those not entirely computer literate I have put 5 possible document templates for use and then printing, only the localization setting in KDE 4.1.2 doesn't seem to be working. Every time Kword 1.6 opens up, it thinks we want to print in A4, which causes the printer to freak.

My question is, since it is a low powered machine and oo.o is out, is there a way to permanently change the driver setting used by Kword 1.6, without installing KDE 3? (or)
Is Kword 2.0 beta in a state that users could edit and print simple forms reliably?
