Garbled text at bottom of windows

I am using KDE 3.5 with Mandriva 2008.1. Since upgrading from 2008.0 I get the following problem:


As you can see there is a jumble of text which appears to be caused by the old text not being cleared and new text written on top of it. This happens with every application that has text on the bottom left of the window. For example Kmail (as shown), amaroK, Kopete etc. If I make the window wider (but not taller) the text corrects itself but then gets garbled the next time something new is written.

All the other text in the window is fine, just the stuff in the bottom left.
