remote: kioslave and its use by dolphin

In "Remote Places" I have some links to Samba shares on a remote server. When I use these links in Dolphin it opens the share using the "remote:" kioslave, and I am unable to create new files or folders on the share (it says "Writing to remote is not supported"). If I open the link using Konqueror, it opens the share using the "smb:" kioslave and I am fully able to create folders & files. Two questions:

1. Does the "remote:" kioslave not support write access, or is there some way to configure it to allow writing?
2. If it doesn't support writing, shouldn't Dolphin use the smb slave like konqueror does? (What is the use of read-only access when the share is set up to allow read/write)
