Hi Guys,
Been using Linux for about a year now, mainly Gnome though.
I have never had problems copying from one folder to another or writing to my ntfs side of things and never had to set parameters in Gnome.
I thought I'd give KDE a look and I find I cannot copy from one area to another across partitions or anything.
Message I am getting is.. I don't have 'permission' or 'access denied' I am the only one using the PC and I don't want to be baulked by a "system" every time I want to move something somewhere else.
Why is KDE so security biased that it prevents the user from doing the basics.
How the heck do I give myself 'permission' to copy stuff.. really frustrating me!
Help would be gratefully received.

Do you understand permissions? I think you need to study up on such topics as the root user account, file permission ( remember everything in uninx is a file) and user and group level file permissions. A good place to start is the man page for chmod.

I do understand the frustrations of ignorance but the fault lies with your education. Unfortunately the system that educated you did a poor job, recently the California court system ruled that the job of the schools is to indoctrinate not educate ( I wish I was kidding and it's worse in other countries), so you have to take the responsibility onto yourself. Man pages are a good place to start. Man pages such as chmod, chown and apropos are places you should begin your search. Any good Linux or Unix book that covers file permissions, all good ones do, would also be a place for you to checkout.

As for the "why did it work with gnome?' question. I suspect you were running as root under gnome and as a user under KDE. Just my suspicions.
