Kpackage wont allow root login.

Hi, I'm a newb when it comes to linux, And i'm having a problem that I can't seem to figure out.
I am running knoppix (installed on HD) with KDE 3.4 on a Pentium 1 with 64M ram.
It's a P.O.S. cpu i want to use as a playground but....

Everytime I get into KPackage, mark the packages I would like to install, press installl marked, And the ROOT LOGIN window pops up- The first letter I enter of my root pswd shuts kpackage down without doing anything!! I've tried everything that has come to mind but i'm stumped as to why this is happening.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, and the ROOT LOGIN window only has a *CANCEL* button, not an *OK* button if that means anything to anybody.

Any help would be appreciated.......
