Compositing not working : what does this message mean?

Hi,
I'm slowly moving to a working KDE4 environment, having compiled everything successfully and set it up on my Slackware-current.
However, I can't manage to make compositing work : I rtied the radeon Xorg driver but could not make it work (I test this on a laptop with a Xpress 200M chip which is not yet completely supported). So I moved to fglrx and after some work managed to compile it and install it properly.
OpenGL works fine (proper AIGLX info in the Xorg.0.log, fglrxinfo reporting proper OpenGL lib, etc.), settings in xorg.conf are OK (DRI 0660, group video, Composite Enable, etc).
But still no compositing and this strange message in the output of startx at the begining :

kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/bin/kwin
kwin(3371): ""fsrestore1" - conversion of "0,0,0,0" to QRect failed"
kwin(3371): ""restore2" - conversion of "0,0,0,0" to QRect failed"
kwin(3371): ""fsrestore2" - conversion of "0,0,0,0" to QRect failed"
kwin(3371): Failed to create Scene object. Compositing disabled

If some dev reads this, can he tell me if the "Compositing disabled" message at this place is the reason why "Failed to create Scene object" or if it's because of the later that compositing is disabled? The message is not very clear here to say what the cause and what's the consequence.
Best regards,
