No image previews in Konqueror or Dolphin

I have an old Gutsy install (it started as Hoary Hedgehog) that is not displaying previews of images in either Konqueror or Dolphin, either in Icon View or in Detail View (when hovering over the file with the mouse I get all the file details but no image, only an icon). If I click on a .jpg in Dolphin in detail view the Information panel just shows an icon for the JPG mime-type. Same story with PNGs, GIFs, etc. When I right-click on an image file in Konqueror or Dolphin the Preview tab displays noting and Automatic Preview is greyed out.

The preview functionality works fine in my wife's account, so I'm not missing any crucial files, like kio-slaves. I ran the kpersonalizer again, making sure image preview was enabled, to no avail. Seems like Konqueror is configured properly, in Previews & Metadata I have Local Protocols and File checked and dialed up the maximum file size to 3 MB. I deleted a few hundred megabytes of old thumbnails in subdirectories of ~/.thumbnails when trying to get previews to work, to no avail. File associations seem fine. It doesn't seem to matter whether I choose to display a file in the Embedded Viewer or a separate program when left-clicking on it.

I guess it would be easy enough to wipe my ~/.kde directory and start over or make a new account, but I am hoping somebody can poke me in the right direction so I don't have to take such an extreme measure. TIA
