The things you plug into a usb port will be identified on the desktop with a usb device on/off icon or other random icon based upon what the system determines a class of device to be. Because USB devices may be hotswapped, there is no way I know of to link a specific icon to a specific device that may not be present at the next boot. I originally gave instructions on how to change icons for on/off devices but that would disable the existing USB icon in favor of another. Not a good plan.

There may be a config file which links specific devices to specific icons but I don't know where to find it. Sorry.

Here is one way to do it without messing anything up.

Right-click anywhere on the desktop.
Select Create New... Link to Location (URL)...

A box will open:

File Name: [enter what you want to name the link]
Enter Link to location (URL): [browse to where your device is located] ie: /media/FAT32 is where my USB hard-drive mounts when I plug it in.
Select 'OK'

A file folder type link to your device will appear on the desktop.

Right-click the link, select Properties.

Click the icon box and browse the sets of icons until you find one you like, then click on it. The Properties box reappears, select OK.

This link will stay on the desktop even when the device is removed and will be active when the device is present.

If the link doesn't become active in the presence of your device, the device may not have mounted. You can mount the device using Kdiskfree. (KDE Menu, Run Command: kdiskfree) Then rt-click the device location shown on the graph and select "mount"

You can also permanently mount the device if it doesn't mount by itself by editing /etc/fstab but I will defer to a more experienced user for that "howto" advice.

You can turn off all system generated device icons by doing the following:

K Menu > Personal Settings (Configure Desktop) > Desktop > Behavior

On the Device Icons tab, uncheck the box in front of "Show device icons" then click Apply

If you want to globally change the icon that represents a specific USB device, you will have to first locate the icon library you are using by going to:

K Menu > Personal Settings (Configure Desktop) > Appearance & Themes

The icon theme will be the highlighted one. Then go to the library for that theme in / (root). For example, in SUSE 10.3, I use Crystalsvg.

32x32 Device icons for this theme are located in:

/opt/kde3/share/icons/crystalsvg/32x32/devices
(other distro's may not use /opt/kde3 so you might check /usr/share/icons and look there)

You would need to be in ROOT to insert (paste) your new custom icons into the icon library for this theme. First rename the old icons you are replacing by adding a "bkp" suffix, then rename the new ones exactly as the originals.

Device icons have 2 forms, _mount and _unmount and several sizes (16, 22, 32, 48, 64, 128 ) You would have to make sets for all versions and sizes. It is quite an undertaking but can be done with persistence. I've done it for the trash icon successfully.

After modifying the libraries, you would then have to go back to K Menu > Personal Settings (Configure Desktop) > Appearance & Themes and just click on any other theme to activate the "Apply" button. Then click back on the installed theme (the one you modified) and click "Apply. This will refresh the theme with your new custom icons.
