Karbon14 displays no colours, only black and white

When I try to use Karbon14 I get no colours in my pictures, only black or white - there seems to be a threshold at which it chooses whether a colour is displayed as black or white...

I get this with imported EPS, and also with new documents I create myself.

I'm running OpenSuSE 10.3, so it's KDE 3.5.7 and KOffice 1.6.3.
I get the same on both of my machines (both OpenSuSE 10.3) - one has Radeon X600 graphics with the fglrx driver and the other is a laptop with a Radeon Mobility M6LY with the radeon driver, so it doesn't look like a graphics card problem (I wouldn't expect it to be)
