kmail attachment does not exist

Kubuntu 7.04, kmail 1.9.6, KDE 3.5.6

When I try to open a second OpenOffice (ie .doc) file I get a message

/tmp/kde-jl/{filename.doc} does not exist

An attachment opens iff OO or whatever is not already open. If OO is running, it always fails with documents or spreadsheets.

This is irritating and I think has something to do with a timing constant when the application is already running.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I am sure it must be my setup. I have been checking whenever updates are made available and my system is fully up-to-date (well I haven't upgraded to 7.10 yet but there are problems there I think... ;))

TIA
