kde 4.1

After some more testing it is clear that kde 4.1 plasma is nearly still the same as in 4.0.4
The plasma devs are not listening to the complaints

TAKE those PLASMA handles in the right tophand corner out and put then elseware because it is interfering with apps covering that space.

Take the handles from the desktop plasmoids we need them as a bad toothake

It is a shame but kde 4.0.99 was running far better then the so called kde 4.1 with all the fixes requested.

When the numbers go higher with kde4 the reality is that the software is worse

It is truly not worth downloading and we can better wait till kde 4.10 or 4.12 so in 3 to 5 years it will be down to earth.

to make it clear, 4.1 is NOT the same as 4.0.4. And the plasma devs ARE listening, that's for sure.

But if you really want to complain something, go to bugs.kde.org, and make a wishlist item.
Serirously, can we stop this discussion on "the great disappointment"?

You have the option to use whatever kde3-app you are used to inside KDE4. Please, the developers are listening.
So, can we please turn this topic off and return to questions and support?

Thanx,
Ingo

To make that clear. Feel free to discuss topics you want to complain about. That's ok. But don't forget, complaining is not enough. Everybody can help, even with reporting it to bugs.kde.org. There you could even get a feedback on how serious your complain is (via the vote system ;) ).
And also don't forget, there really is no need to say "devs are not listening..., nothing changed...". That's simply not true. So please discuss, but with some more kind words.

It seems someone isn't ready to face facts. Regardless of the spin and hype, KDE4 is at this time still a major step backward from kde 3.5.x in functionality, convenience, and configurability. It will remain "the great disappointment" until these aspects are remedied and no amount of "the devs are listening" lip service will change the fact that the factors listed have not been resolved. To me, this means the devs aren't listening to anyone but the new users, the 'buntu community and devs, and other linux users who can't be bothered to use a little grey matter and LEARN!

My first linux experiences were with redhat 5.1 and 5.2 then suse 7.1 and 7.2 (1990s). The version of kde available then (kde 2.1 or 2.2?) was much more usable than kde4 currently is. Granted, kde4 looks better but looks aren't everything.

kde 4.1

As well known i use opensuse 11.0

this afternoon upgraded kde from 4.1.0 to 4.1.60

I wont boot kdm is corrupted

several other links were broken

The yast wil not allow to delete the complete kde4 without damaging kde3

so nothing else as to reinstall Opensuse 11.0 this time without kde4 completely

installed the old ksysguard from before kde4

All is working fine right now

KDE3 for ever

This my last post. adieu !!!!

One thing KDE 4 is NOT going to be is a dissappointment. It's big and important, and innovative, and necessary, and inevitable. It's just not KDE. I don't want to oppose KDE 4. I don't want to criticize KDE 4. I just want to use KDE without a big invisible wall in the middle of it. That's what Plasma feels like to me, a big impermeable Kolgate invisible shield.

A forked KDE would be a preservation effort, not a development effort, so I don't see how it would be as much work as everyone is saying. For 2-5 years, it could be security updates and bug fixes. If Qt 4 doesn't work in KDE3, that's fine, we'll stick with Qt3. No, I don't know what I'm talking about. No, I'm not a developer, but I'll pledge 100 dollars right here and now. KDE 4 is necessary. It's important to the future of GNU/Linux. We should fork KDE so that the devs can stop dealing with those who just want the clean simple KDE they are devoted to.

I suck at predicting the future, but I know an irresistable force when I see it. And I am an immovable object.

Well it's a disappointment right NOW. If they hadn't been cute with the releases, and released KDE 4.0 "alpha" instead of just touting it as a 4.0 release, I wouldn't be nearly as pissed off as I am right now, but here it's 4.1 and now they're saying the "real full release" won't be until 4.2.

KDE 4 has a lot of interesting concepts but it's missing too many things. I'll download widgets and they won't even show up on the widget list. I'll try to add widgets to the desktop or the toolbar and my desktop will crash. I have to say I agree with the title of this thread. It's embarrassing.

This is making me crazy, but it's no one's fault but my own.. I ought to just keep using KDE 3 and patiently wait and see how things are going to play out, because it'll probably play out fine in the end. They say we're going to be able to disable plasma and I bet Konqueror 4 will be available with the filter bar once again, after everything is settled. I ought to just let go of it. But I just can't. Because I'm insane.

I think I'm going to try some other desktops for a while, I just installed XFCE, and I think it's pretty awesome. And I feel much better. In the meantime, anybody who wants to join the KDE3 users' facebook group is still welcome, I'm sure I'll be back to check out KDE again in a while.

Fedora 9 - very disappointing!

I joined this forum solely based on my recent experiences with Fedora 9 /KDE 4
I think it is sad. I have used KDE for the past 5 years, and cannot understand the reasoning behind KDE 4. The new 'k-menu' is disgraceful, Plasma is a novelty and much, much less usable than Superkaramba!, Dolphin reminds me of why I do not favour Gnome, and sold my Powerbook. My laptop is now happily back with Fedora 8(64) and I have no intention of using anything else for the foreseeable future. Please please tell me that A LOT of changes will come to KDE 4 soon.

I really am sad to have to post this, I love KDE 3.5

Fedora 9 /KDE 4

For the nearby future Fedora 9 / kde4 is the first BETAMAX of the linux distros / desktop combinations

Betamax superior in all aspects lost its cause to VHS a far lesser standard.

The same is going to take place with KDE4 against all the other desktops.
The tone is set
The players are in place
only time will tell who wins .

I too, joined this forum due to problem with KDE 4 / Fedora 9. Fortunately I upgraded my Fedora 8 in a backup partion. Actually, I never had the intention of using KDE 4, and did not know that Fedora 9 forces you to use KDE 4. . .

I too am sad. But I won't go as far as saying all is lost on KDE 4. Actually it seems like it will eventually be a major improvement once everything is ported over to it, and the bugs are worked out. Unfortunately it seems the major distros just pushed it in a little too fast for the comfort of most users.

Once you get used to the new ways of configuring things it is possible to get almost back to your old KDE 3 settings. It is easy, at least in 4.1, to get back to the classic K Menu. Unfortunately it is still a Windowsesque animated menu. If anyone has a suggestion on how to turn off the K Menu animation it would greatly be appreciated.

The big loss is Konqueror. . . We need all of Konqueror's file management abilities back and intact.

Edit:
I just now figured out that you can fix the "Windowsesque animated menu" situation by disabling the Fade desktop effect:
systemsettings --> Desktop --> Desktop Effects --> All effects --> Appearance --> Fade
This makes the K Menu much faster.

I think it would be helpful for somebody to help document the way to change settings in KDE 4. This would allow users to configure things the way they need, and hopefully that would allow them the ability to customize enough to be comfortable using it. As an example of the frustration the lack of documentation causes: It took me a very long time to do the simple task of adding program icons to the panel. With the Kickoff style you simply right click on the program. That doesn't work for the classic menu. After scouring the net with Google for over an hour it finally dawned on me that I had to revert to Kickoff to add the icon. . .

This always brings to mind training and testing in the US Army. There aren't enough graduates for a technical job? Make the tests easier. I find the idea of medical equipment techs

tunnel anew I must always go back to my notes. (part of this is I am getting older) Cups just broke, in some
deep mystical way, and I am unable to fix it so am now forced to reinstall Debian from scratch. And
setting up something like Asterisk or the ATI remote control simply have proven to be beyond my capabilities.

my own experience

Dear developers,

This thread is the reason I joined this forum. During the last few days I had my own issues with the KDE 4 desktop.
It all started when I tried to upgrade my desktop to KDE 4.1.1. I used OpenSUSE and one-click install. Then suddenly my video applications failed to work unless I turned off the special effects of kwin.
Whatever. The next day I installed KDE from Slackware-testing using this distribution. KDE 4.1 was so buggy that I soon gave up.

There are some things I didn't like about KDE 4.1:

1. Folder view. Argh! I think it's silly to take away the possibility to put icons on desktop in the way we do this for years! Folder view... Okay... But it took me hours to find out how to create links to applications on my desktop. Why is KDE trying to make our life difficult?

2. Black black black black! Every time i turn on my computer I have the feeling that I'm on a funeral. Why do you use a black theme? Only SUSE is trying to offer something that's bearable, but it doesn't work well. Just take a look of the quick launch icons - the colours are all messed.

3. It's not mature. Surely this will change over time, however.

If you need some help, I am ready to spend some of my free time on the project (I'm not a programmer though). All I'm doing these days is testing, testing, testing... OpenSUSE binaries don't work for me. Slackware binaries either. Now I'll try to recompile the whole stuff from source to see whether it'll work.

I started reading that it was in the planning stages over 2 years ago. As I see it, they took too long talking about it and set a deadline they had no possibility of meeting. This forced sacrifices compromises in functionality.

The egg and the chicken

Seen the preview reports off Windows 7 ??

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2008/10

Forget for a moment it's Windows and you see KDE4 Microsoft style happy colors desktop icons :D

So what i said before the days for KDE4 for windows are numbered with Windows 7 coming

Put Firefox and Amsn on windows 7 (browsing and chat ) and you have Linux with KDE3 and the same programs

Only difference ? you have to pay Microsoft , and drivers for hardly every peace off hardware are there ;)
Linux you can download for free and pray that there are drivers for your hardware ?(

Thank you very much!
I upgraded to 8.10 not realizing it would dump KDE3.5. KDE4.1 is just not usable, it's slow, it's not as customizable as KDE3 (a taskbar spanning both screens is not possible e.g.), and the changes I made are not persistent. I logged in this morning and the reconfigured task bars and stuff where just gone. I don't understand why KDE4 must be such a disappointment. I just makes everything worse - but for what reason?

Thursday, November 13th 2008, 4:13am

KDE 4.1.2 I like it, but...

First off, not a disappointment, I like it and am excited to see it stabilize and hopefully speed up some. Good job developers, I can see about where you are heading... I think.

Now for my feedback,

The Dashboard, cool but wtf, there are usability issues here. I work from my desktop day to day. I put files I am working on this week/month there and I group them in little blocks based on projects. I can't use the desktop this way with kde4 yet. I don't mind the desktop being a widget in the dashboard, but I do need to be able to manually arrange icons in the desktop widget to use it right, it lets me arrange, but won't save on re-login.

The Application launcher, I really like the new system, many new features like right clicking options for menu items and favorites. Now can we free it from the confines of that box. Switching to classic mode removes the right click options for menu items and favorites its a hard choice.

What is going to happen with sound phonon/pulseaudio/alsa/oss what a mess, when are we going to get some solid sanity for sound. I have been using usb speakers annd/or my laptop speakers for years now and its just messy. Maybe one day soon we will be able to just setup default sound devices and the like, this is the case in theory, but what a mess.

Ok thats it for now,
Peace
