After testing KDE 4 it seems to diverge too heavily from the KDE desktop experience that I have used over the years. I would hate to see the mature and highly usable KDE 3.5.x dropped in favor of this somewhat awkward and uncustomizable KDE 4.0 alien. KDE 4.0 should be renamed something ???? 1.0 and started as a separate project that is developed in parallel to the more traditional KDE.

Kde4

I started using PCs using Windows 95 and I still prefer it's clean simple layout. When I started with KDE in Fedora Core before switching to Kubuntu I kept my Desktop in the 9x style.

I tried installing KDE4 and hated it so much that I've registered with a forum for the first time to complain about it.

Whatever improvements there are in 'under the bonnet' the Desktop itself is far too gimmicky and I could not find any way to customise it. My desktop is usually covered by applications so what buttons I need are in the taskbar. Flashy widgets are no good to me if I can't see them.

So far as using it is concerned Dolphin is just a watered down Konqueror. Most importantly for me, Konqueror uses an SSH protocol called Fish which which makes managing files on my network so easy. There are features I use that Dolphin does not have.

I'll be sticking to KDE3 for now.

kde 401

Again the kde4 downloaded now version 4.0.1

Now we can scale the panel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at last

It is starting in half the time from kde3

We can add al kind of programs to the panel sitting left next to sound icon
from there you can start them
You even can put a script there Amsn and start it no icon change is possible

so i put firefox xmms amsn dolfin and kink there
programas i use the most.
Kink is a program to check the ink level in your prrinter

Oh and you have to remove .kde4 from your home directory if you have made alterations to it

So botom line K D E 4.0.1 is becoming what we wanted

and fore the time being i keep kde4 as my standard desktop

RE: kde 401

For opensuse users you can download KDE 4.0.1 from

download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_10.3
download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_10.3

Have fun all the parts of the panel you can config

Right klicking on a empty part give the config options:
Taskmanager settings / Configure panel

The same for the pager

I wish I knew the difference between Alpha, Beta and RC releases. I downloaded KDE4 thinking it was a finished product but it's obviously a work in hand. I'm trying it now on an old machine I use for experiments and it definitely seems faster but I can't use it for routine work.

I've found Konqueror and the split view feature and SSH works but still can't find how to get a detailed list views.

I still can't edit the Task Bar. I might be sixty but my eyesight is still good and can manage with a bar half that size. I would like seconds on the it's digital clock. All systems freeze at times and the seconds ticking away is a useful monitor to show all's well.

I'll stick to my main complaint that KDE4 seems to have watered everything down in the name of simplicity.

Easy to use and easy to find features is simplicity. Removing features is dumbing down and patronising.

Why removing features?

* Why remove the option to show seconds in the taskbar digital clock?
* Why remove the option to have two keyboard shortcuts for a feature? In KDE 3.x it was possible to have two, in KDE 4 you can only have one.

Can anyone tell me why features are removed??

Kde 4

I have been using KDE 4 as my main Desktop Environment since it was released and have not looked back.

Sure, there many problems still but people should have known that going in.

All in all, I am NOT disappointed. I like the direction it is headed.
You will get all your features back that made KDE 3 so great. You just have to have patience.
eh?

KDE 4.0 was a RELEASE VERSION that took over 2 years of development so there shouldn't BE any problems. It is an UPGRADE from 3.5.x that eliminates functionality and configuration options. I wish people like you would take off the blinders and rose-colored glasses and admit that KDE4 WASN'T READY FOR RELEASE. The fact that it's still missing features and buggy means it's still ALPHA and not ready for general release. I think SUSE and the other distributions adopting it as the default version are making a MAJOR mistake.

False. There will always be problems. If you expected none, thats your problem. If you had read anything about KDE4 before installing, you would have known about the problems as well as the reasons for releasing it at its current state. Its been explained over and over again. I don't have on blinders. I see it for what it is which is a work in progress. If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple as that.

I'm sorry, but this "Will always be problems" isn't going to work. Enlightenment (CVS version) is pretty more stable than KDE4, and the developers insist that E is still Alpha. KDE4 doesn't nearly have half of the features of KDE3, it is slow with "desktop (d)effects", and it's buggy (on my PC, when I logout and login again, my widgets and even the taskbar just disappears - I need to remove ~/.kde folder). And, it's "stable", as the developers say.

And, should I say, they reinvent the wheel. Why "desktop effects" when we have Compiz/Beryl? Wouldn't be more inteligent to help on compiz/beryl development, and integrate it better with KDE?

Then use Enlightenment... KDE4 is far more advance than most desktop environments. Read the reviews from Ars Technica and you will see that the framework behind KDE4 is very advance and could lead to many wonderful things.

Enlightenment, while nice, is meant to be a minimal desktop. A small desktop for slower machines.

And there are also reasons for not use Compiz/Beryl. This was explained on one of the developers blogs. If I find the link, I will post it.

That said, I don't disagree that there are a bunch of problems still. People just need to have more patience. There are reasons it was sent out to the wild and they are we as a whole are going to benefit from this choice. Like it or not.

RE: KDE4 - the great disappointment

you dont realy have to install it, if you dont like it stick with 3.5, terminal is still there so for any hard core linux geeks you can still use code, however now linux and bsd have evolved into competetive desktop environments and want to have a market share,if linux does not do so soon it will have a very short shelf life, the only way of doing regardless if YOU like it or not, is to cater for the point and click users not everyone wants to learn code in very much the same way that they dont want to change thier own flat tire, giving rise to support industries......be open my freinds !

dont slam kde 4 i think kde is making a bold step, and with out the support of cononcial (ubuntu) i think linux would be left on the shelf for a few more years without proper marketing and funding......

the general concencus is that linux is for geeks mac affirm this image through thier advertising, the fact of the matter is now my grandma can use linux and would enjoy the experience..... thank you KDE for opening the doors and creating the FOUNDATION for yet another outstanding desktop environment lets hope the community can do for kde4 as they have for its predecesers.

being a die hard fan is one thing stunting growth through shear bloody mindedness is exactly whats wrong with the IT industry......

being open is what bds unix and linux is all about! ! !

Just look at the system settings program that replaces kcontrol. This type of control panel was one of my major disappointments in the re-merge of beryl into compiz, and it's more distressing here. Why are the devs so set on losing ease of use and looking like gnome?

Another annoyance is the menu created by novell/SUSE/openSUSE. I want to know who decided this monstrosity is better? I tire quickly of constant scrolling to find what I'm looking for and if KDE4s only option is the new style menu... well... it won't be on my computers for long.

Worse yet is the influence Ubuntu seems to be exerting. KDE is another of a long line of projects that has fallen under the control of Ubuntu.

I'll give KDE4 a try when it's released but I expect to be massively disappointed and will probably start looking for something to replace it soon after.

well well well, another linux biggot.......open your mind my friend - i think the first ting to point out to you is that with this release your seeing a foundation with lot of work under the hood for developers to work from (watch the keynote and bend your narrow mind) - the ui and setting features im glad to say are heading in the right direction for the non technical user, with a familiar intuative (to mac users) settings console.

having an opinion is a good thing but beeing a creature of habit IS as bad as being a patent whore (apple) both are ass guilty as each other of stunting progress also funding stnts progress and unless you can pool the money and support that ubuntu/cononcial provides then drop the sour note - ubuntu have done a very good thing for linux, they have been a great catalyst in helping bring a usable linux desktop to the home market bringing more noobs than any other distro - this is good for linux !

and lets face ti with microsoft churning out perpetualy shite and unusable OS's people are looking elsewhere kde4 meets all the requirments of the average windows user its only the veiws of the established linux user that will have any impact on the generl public.......linux does not have a corperate face, does not have sales men in pcworld or any other highstreet shoping environment - as a comunity you must woo and invite with warm OPEN arms otherwise you and your bitter dislike for change will be the death of linux !

kde 4.0.1

this morging downloaded kde4.0.1 release 12.4 for opensuse 10.3

Now you can configure the panel the pager the clock , still no seconds

Some times out off the blue 1 cpu out of 4 is loaded 100% only restart kde4 will stop that

changing the wallpaper with anything not belonging to kde4 so one jpg or png gives a white screen and you have to restart kde4 to get it displayed.

both the menus only give kde 3 programs the 1th time started the 2th time both kde3 and kde4

the panel smallest size is 38 smaller the clock and pager are cut off

all the other icons and the taskmanager scale fine even with kde3 icons

icons on the desktop now include MyComputer giving more info than in kde3
the size of the desktop icons is 50% too large and why scale them delete the handles for scaling delete and rotate and make icons on the desktop via settings scalleble read smaller than default.
delete a icon is no problem right klick on it and you can delete it

Gkrellm wont give a transparant theme number 4 and 5
only black

firefox has problems in that the backgroud is bleeding through sometimes

no more rouded corners on a window with qt-curve theme

testing is going on and a new report is coming in 2 a 4 days

kde 4.0.1

Now we have kde 4.0.1 release 14.3

hopefully there are changes cause the download every time is increasing in time

As for the real to configre parts of kde 4 no change as to my last report

So from release 10.3 up to 14.3 only a few apps have changed
but the hot items to configure there is no progress

If every things keeps this way more and more users are saying "goodbye" to kde4 and are waiting for kde 4.7

No one seems to care from all the questions for more config optios as in kde3
vage promessis wait to you see kde 4.1

And then in the end we have kde 4.1 and what will we see, half the options from kde3 are inplemented.

So the more i see of kde 4 the more i think it is a dream in the development camp
coming from a dream to hard reality can't be done in 2 years or so as we see now.

RE: kde 4.0.1

I really cannot believe how poor the functionality and configuration of KDE4 are, it has an even more FisherPrice Kindergarden interface than Windoz XP... Unbelievable...

I hope that someone continues to develop KDE 3.5 and that KDE 4 is abandoned, it is so poor... hopefully it will just role over and die, otherwise Gnome and Compiz are just going to slaughter it... oh they already have... and I was a fan of KDE too...

I made my comments about KDE4 some time ago.

Since then the discussion has degenerated into an exchange of insults which doesn't help anyone.

I keep my computers up to date because of the vast amount of work that goes on behind the scenes keeping Linux a viable and modern operating system and I'd like to thank the developers for their efforts.

That said there is one point I would like to make.

I've used a friends computer once or twice which has Vista on it. It is full of widgets as well. As soon I open an application, they're covered and useless. I rely on the taskbar and in KDE4 it seems to be a lot less functional.

Kde 4.0.1

today downloaded kde4 again

suprise its version 4.0.2

no visible changes to 4.0.1

nothing more easy to configure

So we wait again till the next release and if they dont learn to listen to users its RIP kde 4

No single user asked for it.

So give us kde 3.6.0 release 12.5 or better

And dont play the games the QT4 makers are playing. You dont have to follow them

kde 4.0.2

Completly removed KDE 4.0.2
Made a new install

Now the panel is possible with a size 30

Still the desktop icons a very large, half the size would be fine
my desktop is 1680 x 1050 and with these icons only 8 rows are possible

So please scale down the icons

And once again make the same config options in kde4 as there are in kde3
and give this priority 1.
