No sound system in KDE 3.5.7 on Gentoo 2007.0

Hello everybody,

I'm here to ask a question that drives me mad.

I installed a command line 2007.0 Gentoo. Then I installed KDE (emerge KDE). My USE var has the "alsa" flag set.

I have verified, the script /etc/init.d/alsasound works perfectly, and i DO have a /dev/dsp which has 777 permissions.

My problem is that i can't get any sound!

I have a kernel compiled perfectyl (not that i'm god, but I have used the settings of my Ubuntu Kernel on which sound runs perfectly) and this has been verified on the alsa-project site, and many other forums.

When I use AMAROK, i get an error: "xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers".

When I use the KControl center: "Unable to start the sound server to retrieve possible sound I/O methods. Only automatic detection qill be available."

When I launch kmix, it doesn't find any sound driver and I just get an empty white window...

... I'm quite out of idea... Is there anybody able to help me?

(I've compiled and recompiled my Kernel thousands of time, with different configs, and I followed the guide for my card (onboard VIA AC97, which uses the snd_via82xx module) on alsa-project. )

It would be great if someone had an idea to solve this problem.

Thanks by advance.

RE: No sound system in KDE 3.5.7 on Gentoo 2007.0

Evolution of the situation:

I've installed aRts and recompiled the whole KDE, amarok, ... with the arts USE flag, and not I can access the "sound system" section of my KDE Control center.

Now, when I'm booting, I have another error:

Informational - artsmessage

sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver.
device: default can't be opened for playback. (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I'm still searching...

RE: No sound system in KDE 3.5.7 on Gentoo 2007.0

New evolution: I DO have sound!

No more error, but KDE doesn't control anything and kmix stays empty... I'm forced to use alsamixer each time what is a bit boring.

To get sound: I have set the "sound" section as module in the kernel and selected neither ALSA neither OSS in the sound subsections.

I have emerged ALSA (almost everything related to alsa in fact: alsa-utils, alsa-tools, alsa-headers, alsa-oss, alsa-driver) from the Gentoo repositories and I worked.

Now, I'm gonna look for a way to enable kmix control... If anybody has an idea, it would be great :)
