Wallpaper sizes

Hello,
I am wondering, when making wallpapers for the KDE environment, I would like to make just "one-size fits all".... But, does anyone have a suggestion on just what exactly that size should be??
Please take into consideration the wide-screens..... I have found that when I tried to resize using Gimp, obejects would become warped and "squished"

I am also very interested to know if there are certain programs I should be looking into when designing wallpapers, icons, etc. for the KDE environment??!! Someone had suggested QT-4 to me??
I have absolutely no c++ experience or anything so... just looking to try and figure all this stuff out... Thanks

Sincerely:
GeminiGuy
