kmix confused

Hi I managed to get sound a month ago by discovering and playing around with Kmix but now it has stuffed up again because I plugged in a USB webcam. It did that last time too I think. I don't know. I can't hear anything and I can't record. The webcam is now unplugged and it did list in Kmix as a camera. There is no use having it connected as I have tried and tried for too long to get it working but I had it connected this time because I was on my windows drive playing with it and I forgot to disconnect it before booting into the Debian drive. I have a dual boot thing happening on this machine. I have only been using Debian for a month and a half and prior to that using Ubuntu on a notebook so there is a lot to learn. The thing I find with Kmix is there are just too many things to choose from that I do not understand and I read a document on Kmix just now but that did not help as it was too basic. I have a lot more selections in my version of Kmix. Also I have a 2nd soundcard and disabled "sound on board" in the bios. It seems that Kmix has recognised this correctly though as at the bottom it says the name of what it percieves the soundcard as which is a "Dell sound blaster". That is what it listed as when the sound was working so that is fine. Should I show an image capture of the 3 pages of Kmix in order to explain further as I do not understand any of them?
