Mouse gestures

Mouse gestures are a nice and especially ergonomic feature for many apps. Can't they be integrated to KDE too ? It would be REALLY GOOD to have some gestures for: close/minimize window, ALT-TAB, next/previuos workspace, etc. Is it a big job to do?

Right Button Pressed-Released

There is one mouse event which is not at all used. I even don't understand how this flaw survived so long on almost every OS.
This means the following: if you press the right button there is a menu displayed, and the type of this menu depends on where you do the right click/press: konqueror, desktop, text-editor, etc. Now, if you release the right-button guess what .... the menu stays (or dissapears, or whatever). There is to say ... two mouse events are used for more or less the same thing.
Now, do the following experiment:
1) Install Firefox
2) Do a right button PRESS - menu appears
3) Install Mouse Gestures extension
4) Do a right button PRESS - no menu appears any longer
5) Do a right button RELEASE (of course, you cannot do a release without a press) - the menu appears.
The PRESS event is used in combination with any other mouse movement to define the gestures.
Does KDE mouse gestures use the same principle? Because as long as there are still some things displayed when doing a right button PRESS, I wouldn't call that mouse gestures.
Thank you for your clarifications.

No mouse gestures whatsoever

Sorry for being so lame, but I couldn't set up the simplest mouse gesture ever: right button PRESSED + movement down = close the window over which the gesture is performed.
Could someone be so nice, please, as to provide a step by step (that interface in KControl is far from being the most intuitive one) guide on how to do that?
Please note that I still talk about KDE MOUSE GESTURES (mouse gestures that trigger desktop actions), and not Konqueror(or any other application based) gestures. We all know those ones.
More examples of events associated to mouse gestures: close last window/application in taskbar, perform ALT+TAB, minimize/close current window, switch desktops. I would also like to know how I can associate a COMMAND to a mouse gesture (useful if I want to launch a hibernate, logout, or any application I want with any PARAMETERS I want).
Please help, because I am really lost on this topic which I would really like to have. I am so surprised that it's such an overlooked topic with so few debates.

I will keep posting

Hi, i'll update this thread everytime I am trying more on this topic.
I did create a new action, I associated a mouse gesture with it, I enabled mouse gestures. Still, the first thing which i notice is that the right button pressed is still working. Now, I would not expect that if mouse gestures are really enabled. Could someone please confirm which is the IMPLEMENTED behavior for a right-button-pressed? I would really like to use them, but I already spent the time I could have saved in a whole year of using these gestures and I am far from getting them to work.
I really don't understand why it is (seems) so complicated to set up these gestures when there are some other interfaces (please see Mozilla suite) which hardly need any explanations on how to use/set them up. By the by, is there any help/user manual/documentation on this topic?
Thank you all!

Hi,

Mouse Gesture are indeed a very nice feature but I have a problem too. I can use them for actions specific to an applications (new tab for konqueror, mark as read for a flux in akregator...) but not for system wide things (ex : simulate Alt-F4 to close a windows when I do a gesture on a window)

Is is a bug or a limitation ? It seems good if it can be fixed for KDE4... :)

Me too, I couldn't set a mouse gesture to close a window.

Thank you all!

Hi,

I think this is a nice project for usefull mouse gestures
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php…s?content=30108
A menu structure may be nice, too (instead of point-and-click menu)

Right Button Pressed-Released:
If you click short (click&release) the menu stays, if you click and donĀ“t releas, the menu will disappear, if you release outside the menu. I think this behaviour is usefull, because you can assign left-click on the desktop to the window list (like alt+tab).
