Missing Documents and Pictures

Hi there.. Although the folder ~/Documents and ~/Pictures exist on disk,
and have their shortcuts on ~/Desktop , these icons do not show on desktop!
If I open up the file browser and navigate to Desktop, I can see that both Documents and Pictures symbolic links exist, but the desktop itself does not show them!
I tried removing the symbolic links and re-creating them, but it did not help.
I also went into the control center and enabled 'show hidden', still no go.

Is there any way to show these two directories on the desktop?
Thanks!

Oh yes - all other icons are fine, except those two.
The only thing that seems special about those two is that they have their customized icons.
I wonder if that does it?
