Lost email archive during upgrade - pls help!

I installed a new hard drive. While playing around I somehow rendered the system on the old hard drive disfunctional - I can't start kde, though I can get a console login just fine. I need to bring over all my email that was in kontact on the old HDD onto the new one but I don't know where it resides.

I tried just copying ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/* from the old HDD to the equivalent location on the new drive, and when I opened Kontact on the new system it did show some signs, namely a couple of drafts and two emails I had tried to send unsuccessfully long ago when I had the connection set up wrong, but nothing else. Any suggestions? I'm hoping desperately that I'm just looking in the wrong place!
