Instability in KDE

I've tried both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, both of them being the 6.10 versions. I prefer KDE, so I'd rather use that, but I've noticed that the GUI is rather unstable. I haven't used GNOME long enough to know if it's unstable or not, but I know KDE is.

For example, if I unplug my computer by accident when it's shutting down, KDE will go down. It's easy enough to fix, of course - just use apt-get to get KDE again - but it's a definite nuisance. There's also weird stuff, like uninstalling Python 2.4. If I do that, then part of the taskbar for KDE will go crazy.

Is this a problem with the distribution? I'm willing to go through the Debian installation process if it makes the final product as stable as, say, WinXP. But if it's just a problem with KDE, then I'll reconsider.

So, is KDE this finicky on other distros? Or is it just Ubuntu?

You mean that you corrupted your hard disk and need to reinstall parts of the system and blame kde for that?

You mean that you uninstall libraries kde in kubuntu depends on and find it odd that something goes crazy?

RE: Instability in KDE

Granted, unplugging your computer while it's shutting down isn't the smartest thing to do. Nor is uninstalling stuff that the computer needs. I'm asking how other distros respond to this sort of behavior.

last time i had data corruption with linux was when i used ext2 as file system (mandrake 6.x i guess). Never experienced this with suse or ubuntu.

as for python: it's odd that you could remove it without dpkg complaining. pythons is used for severel kde parts in kubuntu, like the adept package manager and guidance configuration tool.

I was trying to uninstall Python 2.4 and install Python 2.5. I think, since Python was going to be installed, Kubuntu didn't complain. Once 2.4 was gone, though, Adept stopped working.

ah, for some reason adept (or pyKDE used by adept) is not compatible with python 2.5

You could report this to the creators of Adept via a bugreport
