kde4 HIG

I've been reading for some months now that many kde apps are being ported to QT4. Some are already QT4 compatible. That sounds great.

My question is : where is the kde 4 Human Interface Guidelines ?

Right now, correct me if I'm wrong there is no KDE4 HIG available. Not yet.

All I found was : a KDE 4 Human Interface Guidelines Developers Survey by Celeste Lyn Paul, June 2006 (check it out here) and a KDE4 Human Interface Guidelines Information Design Document also by Celest Lyn Paul (here July 2006).
It shows kde staff and developers are concerned about that matter and work on it. But well, we're in january 2007. KDE4 is supposed to be out sometime during this year.

I'm asking this because I find quite weird to hear people porting apps from QT3 to QT4 without having some sort of direction. I'm no pure coder and I understand it's possible to 'translate' QT3 code into QT4 code. But considering all the new stuff QT4 is going to bring over, I think that would have been a good thing for developers to have some kind of Interface reference before kde4 is out.

At this moment people might be coding new apps using QT4 without the relevant HIG or using KDE3 HIG which might, afaik, in many cases, conflict (from an interface point of view) with QT4.

Well if you have information about KDE4 HIG feel free to share.

I don't think that the kde 3 hig wil conflict with qt4.

I don't think that the absense of the kde 4 hig will cause problems with porting apps to kde4.
In my experience, developers will first port their applications 1 on 1 to kde4, resulting in a kde3-looking application that runs under kde4.

After that, during the kde4 series the applications will move towards the kde4 hig.
(the same thing happend with gnome, most applications were ported to the gnome hig, and later during their release cycles started adopting the hig guidelines)

For further information, please contact the KDE HCI team.

Well you tell me kde3 hig won't conflict with qt4 and I trust you since I'm not much of a coder.
So I understand when kde4 will be out it will 'mostly' look the way kde3 look and it will take some time to found and polish the kde4 HIG.

That is a huge disappointment to me and I believe for lot of people out there. You can put a rocket engine in an old car, engineers can be impressed by the design, for most people it's still an old car. Of course it's still better than a Ferrari with a Ford T engine ;-)

Anyway I hope people will find in kde4 some of the things they have dreamed of.

A lot of people expect kde4 to be something it won't.

At planetkde.org there are some blogs that warn users that kde4 won't be the completely amazingly new and different desktop that everyone believes.

There will be a lot of new technology available when kde 4.0 comes out, but that does not mean that every kde application out there will take advantage of them immediatly. Some will pick it up when kde 4.01 comes out, others when kde 4.2 arrives, etc.

SO kde4 will be amazing, but that does not mean that the first release of kde4 (4.0) makes full use of all the newest features.

As for the looks of kde4: the largest part of looks is not determined by guidelines, but by the widgets, themes and icons that are used.
So even if they will continue using the hig of kde3, kde4 will look totally different compared to previous versions.
