Can't edit xine-config for kaffeine

I'm having trouble playing *.wmv files in Kaffeine. I have the appropriate codecs in /usr/lib/codecs, but am having trouble telling Kaffeine that they're there. In ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config, the following lines are commented out as so:

Source code

1
2
3
# path to Win32 codecs
# string, default: /usr/lib/codecs
# decoder.external.win32_codecs_path:/usr/lib/codecs

but when I uncomment the last line, save the file, and then try to open a file, Kaffeine gives an error about being unable to load the wmv codec. When I go back to check xine-config, I find that the lines are commented out again. There was one lucky time this didn't happen and the wmv file played without incident, but I haven't been able to figure out what (if anything) was different that time. What might causing this and how can I stop it?
