However, back to your question, the volume increase key registers a key press when I run XEV, it returns the proper keycode. I don't recall whether I tried to assign another function to the key. This is no longer an issue at this point. If I consider going back to Suse, I will try your suggestion. I would also update KDE to the currect release, which may solve the problem.
Thanks for your suggestion and time. Now on to solve the screensaver issue...
