[Kopete] Cannot connect to MSN Messenger

Hi,

I'm running Kopete 0.12.1 (using KDE 3.5.4 Kubuntu 6.06 packages).
Whenever I try to connect to MSN Messenger network, the little butterfly
icon on the bottom right corner flaps its wings for a long time (couple of
minutes?), and then it finally gives up with the following error message:

Source code

1
2
3
There was an error while connecting to the MSN server.
Error message:
operation is not supported

Any ideas of what might be causing the problem?
(Like, did the MSN protocol just change recently?)

Thanks in advance,
Jean

I've been having the same problem for almost a week, Debian unstable, Kopete 0.11.3 (Using KDE 3.5.4). X(

More sightings of same problem

Hi,

Well, a friend of mine who uses aMSN says that he had the same problem,
so it's not specific to Kopete. Anyway, I smell a rat. Perhaps the kind folks
at Microsoft decided to screw everybody not using their official client. Do
any of the Kopete developers know what happened?

Cheers,
Jean

Thanks for the info. I installed gaim today, same result. I'm now pretty sure that it's Raydmond's trick :P

But still strange that Kopete (still) connects without problems.

Hey Bram,

Surely you mean "Kopete (still) *cannot* connect".
Is there someone out there for whom Kopete is managing
to connect to the MSN network?

Cheers,
Jean

Maybe there was a problem with the servers lately? I'm able to connect here just fine.

I haven't experienced any problems recently, neither on Kopete nor Gaim.

I still can't, both kopete and gaim, but can connect using Live messenger under Windows, weird problem.

I checked both Debian and KDE bug reports and didn't find any relevant information, maybe the problem is really on my side, but I can't find any clue. ?(

Debian? I just got a similar bug report for my MSN messenger client from an Ubuntu user: http://kmess.sourceforge.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=986 I'm curious whether you see some warning messages too when you start Kopete in the console.

We told me he could connect with all accounts except the hotmail.com ones. It also occurred in GAIM, which makes me believe it's actually a problem in openssl/libcrypto in Ubuntu (or Debian).

Yes, bunch of error messages like this:

"MNG error 1029: Chunk out of sequence; chunk TERM; subcode 0:0"

Is this related with openssl/libcrypto?

I'll try Kmess later and post result as soon as possible, I'm now in windows.

Hi, vdboor and all, thanks for your help, problem solved, it turn out to be my stupid fault, a week ago, my ISP's DNS had some problem, so I temporarily changed the name server to one I found on the web, it belongs to the Dell network , I forgot to changed it back. Just now I ran netstat and whois, surprisingly found that kopete and kmess wanted to connect to a server also belongs to the Dell.com. Now I've changed the name server back to the ISP's, everything is OK now. My windows box's setting didn't change so not affected.

Thank you all again, say sorry to Microsoft
