Only choice on logout is Logout or Cancel

Howdy . . . When I click on the logout button a very small screen pops up asking "end session for 'root' " with the only choices being Logout or Cancel. There is no option to shut down, restart, or save session.

I have read other posts about logout problems and have altered my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file to read

DESKTOP="KDE"
DESKTOPMANAGER="KDE"
[code:1]
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
[/code:1]

None of those addtions have helped, and I'm note sure of the proper format for those commands, or if they are superfluous or detrimental. I'm using Fedora and loggin in without using the GUI interface. I find it reassuring to watch the command line scroll by to the final lline blinking for me to enter a user name. Some users on this system are using Gnome and others are using KDE. Those using Gnome have the logout display showing the normal multiple choices. As root using KDE, my only choice is to log out to the command line or not log out at all.

How do I change my logout screen to present all options?

Thanks, Tony

KDE needs KDM running to offer you the shutdown/reboot options, which appears not to be running on your system since you login from the console.

That's what I kinda thought. But what I don't understand is why I can log into a Gnome user session from the console and when I log out it will pop up the multiple-choice logout splash screen, but when I log into a KDE session it will not. Is there a syntax or command I can use from the console that will load KDM when I start a session for a KDE user? I've tried using 'startkde' instead of 'startx', but that didn't work. Neither did 'startx -- :1' .

I thought putting the line

DESKTOPMANAGER="KDE"

in /etc/sysconfig/desktop would accomplish getting KDM running, but it seems to have no effect.

In all other ways both KDE and Gnome sessions seem to load and run normally from the console.

I'm not familiar with Fedora internals, but could you try to locate the right file for putting the env. variable

Source code

1
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm
? Displaymanager and desktopmanager are two different things, and you seem only set the desktopmanager.

RE: Only choice on logout is Logout or Cancel

Howdy Bram,

Thanks for helping me with the syntax. I changed DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE" to ="KDM". It didn't seem to help, though.

Red Hat documentation shows the following image as the only KDE GUI logout screen, which is exactly what I see when I log out (where "user" is replaced by the user's name between quotes). This makes me think the porblem is specific to Red Hat/Fedora.

I've decided to wait until I install the new Fedora Core 5 with the latest version of KDE and then work on the problem. I'm hoping it has been eliminated by the integration of latest core release and with the latest KDE release.

Thanks again for your help,

Tony

I share your frustration. I am a registered but can't seem to find where/how to post a problem. At least you and others know how to ask a question on this forum. All I seem to be able to do so far is reply to posts. Any HELP would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Look for New Thread buttons on top of the screen, when you're inside one of the forums.

Many, many thanks. I posted my Kmix audio problem. If others respond as promptly, I'll be able to start using my new Linux straight away. Again, many thanks and all the best to you.
