[Kopete] AIM Chat room help

Hello, I am new to Linux and KDE so please forgive my ignorance.

I am trying to switch to SuSE/KDE and love it. For my work I often have to take part in AIM chat rooms but can't seem to find a decent Linux chat program. The Linux AIM crashes a lot, GAIM disconnects me from chats often, and other people cannot invite me to AIM chats when I'm running Kopete. I like Kopete a lot apart from the AIM chat issue. Any Kopete tricks/tips for AIM chat rooms? I'm currently using Kopete 0.11.1, but have tried 0.12 with the same results. The people trying to invite me are using the new Windows AIM 'bloatware' client.

I'm running OpenSuSE 10.0 X86 64 with KDE3.5.2 - installed via YaST/Supplemental KDE

RE: [Kopete] AIM Chat room help

AFAIK, there is no support in the protocol for chat room invitations unless this is a new thing that Kopete doesn't support yet. Kopete 0.12 will support AIM chat rooms but you have to know the room name and the exchange number yourself.

RE: [Kopete] AIM Chat room help

Thanks for the reply Mattr. I didn't think the support was there but had to check. I'll have to hunt for other clients.....

RE: [Kopete] AIM Chat room help

I'm using Kopete 0.12.5 but haven't been able to figure out how to join a chat room with it. The manual says to use the Join Chat... command on the AIM account menu, but I don't see any such menu, let alone menu item.

Can anybody help out here?

RE: [Kopete] AIM Chat room help

Oh, I figured it out. The "AIM menu" is what you get when you click on the little AIM buddy icon in the lower right corner of the main window.

The other thing you need to know (besides the chat-room name) is the "exchange" to use. I had managed to connect to the chat-room using Pidgin, which is a clever beast that can figure the exchange out on its own, so I was able to enter that. Otherwise, if you enter the wrong exchange (or chat-room name) you get bupkis, not even an error message.

Pidgin is apparently not so very clever, you have to enter the exchange number with it as well (unless you are accepting an invitation, which Kopete doesn't support) but it does have a more sensible default, which is exchange 4 (rather than 2).

http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/aim-su…-aol-chats.html provides a useful list of exchanges:

Here are some exchange numbers and their properties as known so far:

1 Unknown
2 AOL Private Chat/AIM Encrypted Chat (AIM users can only enter if they have a security certificate for IM and chat encryption)
3 Unknown
4 AIM/AOL (This is the exchange under the English Buddy Invite option found as a result of right clicking and choosing buddy invite on the buddylist) [23 people max]
5 AIM only (This is the exchange used for the hyperlinks on the AIM chatlink pages under the chat and send window. When a room such as "Computing Chat" maxes out it creates a new chat in numbered succession to put you in. Example "Computing Chat 1" "Computing Chat 2" and so forth. [23 people max]
6 AIM=Unknown properties
7 Unknown
8 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
9 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
10 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
11 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
12 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
13 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
14 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
15 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties
16 AIM/AOL=Unknown properties [48 people max]
17-28 AOL=Unknown properties
